From the Himalayas to Swedish Homes
It all started with Om Mokshanada, a Swedish massage therapist who was 28 at the time and traded his day job to become a monk in the Himalayas. While studying the ancient art of Ayurvedic medicine, he became fascinated by the traditional Indian nail mat. And so Shaktimattan was born! When Om and his mother Nadine launched the mat in Sweden in 2007, it flew off the shelves — over 1 million sold! The world couldn't get enough of this self-care sensation and Shakti went global.
What Does "Shakti" Mean?
"Shakti" is an ancient Sanskrit word for the divine feminine force — think compassion, creativity, and care. We like to believe that all the handmade love woven into every mat travels from India and on to you.
An Ancient Tradition, Honoured Anew
Over 200 million people practise yoga, acupressure, and meditation regularly — ancient arts from India's culture, but sadly many of those behind them receive nothing in return for their efforts. We've seen this ourselves and been moved by it. Shakti honours these traditions by creating the best acupressure tools and reinvesting profits back into India. We believe it's worth doing the uncomfortable thing, and that tools for healing and mindfulness should be created with the same care.
