What does it feel like?

When you use the Shaktimat, pressure is applied to your skin and muscles through thousands of spikes. For many, the experience can feel a little uncomfortable and prickly at first. This only lasts a few minutes before a tingling, warming sensation spreads through you, much like deep heat. The discomfort fades, your muscles begin to relax and the tension releases. This can create a sense of wellbeing and such deep relaxation that you might even fall asleep. We all have different pain sensitivities. For some, it takes just a few minutes to get used to the Shaktimat, whilst for others it may take a few sessions. Over time, your body adapts to the initial discomfort and learns to respond more quickly to the pressure from the mat.

Does it hurt?

For most people, the experience can feel uncomfortable at first. Often, your body enters a kind of \"resistance mode\" due to possible physical or mental stress. But after around 3–5 minutes, the discomfort usually turns into relaxation. Everyone is different – whilst your friend might get used to the Shaktimat straight away, it could take a couple of weeks for you to adapt. Here are our two best tips for beginners: Tip #1: Relax and let go. The more you tense up and resist the spikes, the more it will feel. Use your breathing to calm your body, or distract yourself with a book, podcast or TV series. Tip #2: Be patient with yourself. Don't expect to become a Shakti expert right away. Give yourself time to adjust and know that with a bit of persistence, you'll soon love the experience and won't want to miss a single session. How do I use it?

The Shakti mat works through direct contact. When you place the mat against your body, the spikes gently press against your skin. On your first use, you might start by using the mat on your neck, shoulders, back or legs – areas that often hold tension. But you can use it anywhere on your body. There are no time or frequency restrictions for Shakti sessions, and it's completely normal to fall asleep on the mat. We recommend at least 15 minutes to experience the full benefits of the acupressure. During your first few sessions, you can wear a thin t-shirt or place a pillowcase over the mat whilst your body adjusts. But for best results, bare skin is the way to go! Use your mat wherever you like – in bed, on the floor, in a chair or on the sofa. Softer surfaces provide a bit of extra "support" and can be a good place to start.

What's the difference between the different levels?

The Shakti mat's levels vary in intensity depending on the number of spikes. Contrary to what you might think: the fewer the spikes, the more intense the effect. This is because your body weight is distributed over fewer points, creating a more powerful sensation. Light (Level 1): Perfect to start with. Ideal for beginners to acupressure. Original (Level 2): For the "brave". More initial discomfort but deeper intensity. Advanced (Level 3): For experienced users seeking maximum stimulation. Delivers deep, focused activation of acupressure points. Ultra (Level 4): For the seasoned user who wants the most intense. The sharpest spikes and the most direct stimulation.

What if I don't like it, or bought the wrong mat?

If you feel the Shakti mat isn't right for you, email us at hello@shaktimattan.com — you'll receive a return shipping label, and the cost of it, currently £6, will be deducted from your refund. If the product was a gift, contact us with the full name of the person who placed the order, and we'll help you with instructions for exchange or return.

How do I store my Shakti mat properly?

To extend the life of your Shakti mat, we recommend rolling it up (preferably with the spikes facing inwards), storing it in a dry, cool place, and avoiding folding it. You can also hang it up or use a storage bag for convenient, neat storage. Roll it up: Roll the mat from the short end with the spikes facing inwards (or outwards if you prefer). It then takes up minimal space. Use a storage bag: If you have a storage bag or yoga mat bag with a strap, you can store the mat neatly inside and easily take it with you. Store in a dry, cool place: Avoid direct sunlight and humid environments – this extends the lifespan of both the fabric and the spikes. Hang it up: If you use your mat often, you can hang it on a hook or rail for quick access.

Can I return or exchange my order?

Not happy with your purchase? No problem! You can return the product and get your money back within 30 days of receiving your order, as long as the item is in the same condition as when you received it. Request a return online via our contact page. If the product was a gift, contact us with the full name of the person who placed the order, and we'll help you further. Once your return has been received and processed at our warehouse, we'll refund the product amount within usually 5 working days. Returns and exchanges do not apply to wholesale/B2B orders.

My Shakti mat/pillow has the wrong "intensity", can I exchange it?

If your mat or pillow feels too mild or too intense, you can exchange it for a different level within 30 days, as long as the product is in the same condition as when you received it. Contact us via our contact page. If the product was a gift, contact us with the full name of the person who placed the order, and we'll help you with instructions for the exchange. This applies only to Shakti products purchased directly via the shaktimattan.se website. Products purchased from one of our retailers cannot be returned or exchanged directly with us. If you wish to return or exchange a Shakti product purchased from a retailer, contact the retailer directly. Each retailer has their own returns and exchange policy. Please note that we only offer one exchange per order.

A spike has come loose – what should I do?

Accepted Answer

Because Shakti products are handmade, this can happen occasionally. The good news is it's easy to fix! If you still have both the spike and the backing disc, you can simply reattach them by pushing the smaller disc up through the fabric and pressing the spike on top so both parts click together (something heavy, like a book, works well). You should hear a "click" when the spike locks onto the disc. If the spike or clip has gone missing, start by checking inside your Shakti mat – the clip can hide in there! Otherwise, get in touch with us and we'll send you a replacement as soon as possible. Please contact us with your order number and we'll sort this.

Will Lavender and Orange come back in the Classic range?

Accepted Answer

No, Lavender and Orange have been discontinued from the Classic range and won't be coming back. Demand was low, and since we launched our Premium range, most customers have chosen that line instead. Classic now features Green and Black (mat and pillow) plus Indigo (Advanced level) — or choose one of the Premium colours: Amber, Tulsi and Black. Classic pillow Level 1 (Yellow) is also only available while stocks last for the same reason, and will be discontinued after that.

Can I use my Shakti mat if I'm pregnant?

Unfortunately, we don't recommend pregnant women use the Shakti mat, particularly during the first trimester. The Shakti mat uses acupressure, which in some cases has been used to naturally induce labour. Always consult your doctor before using the mat. However, the Shakti mat is a fantastic and completely safe tool after giving birth. New mothers can experience back tension, hip stiffness, sleep loss, stress and more – all things the Shakti mat can provide natural support for.

Can I use the Shakti mat if I have a medical condition?

Do not use the Shakti mat or its accessories if you have any of the following conditions: Coagulation problems or if you're taking blood-thinning medication. The Shakti mat can affect circulation and is therefore not recommended for people with circulation-related and/or blood coagulation problems. Epilepsy – The Shakti mat is covered with thousands of sharp spikes and could be dangerous if a person has a seizure whilst using it. Significant skin damage in the area where you intend to use the mat, including severe skin inflammation or large skin lesions. Certain skin conditions may be worsened by the mat. Neuropathy with loss of sensation or reduced sensation, as this can affect your ability to feel the sharpness of the spikes. Pregnancy – Certain acupressure points are sometimes used to naturally induce labour (see previous FAQ). Cardiovascular conditions – The Shakti mat can affect circulation and is therefore not recommended for people with heart and circulatory problems. Thrombophlebitis – see coagulation problems and cardiovascular conditions above. Fever or other acute illness. If you have any other medical condition or illness, we recommend you consult your doctor before using the product. If you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before use.

Can I use my Shakti mat if I have tattoos?

It's fine to use the Shakti mat if you have tattoos, but avoid using it during the healing period. Don't use the Shakti mat if you experience any irritation in the tattooed area. Always consult a doctor if you're unsure.

Yes, children can use the Shakti mat. However, we recommend close supervision due to the sharpness of the spikes.

We've found that skin sensitivity determines the experience, not weight. Use the Shakti mat and accessories to create a Shakti experience that works for you. This might mean combining two Shakti mats, or a mat and pillow, for a more effective session. Remember, the Shakti mat doesn't need to cover your entire back to provide a great treatment. What is the Shakti mat made from?

Organic cotton: The outer cover of each Shakti mat is made from organic cotton and dyed with toxin-free dyes. The cotton and dyes are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), recognised as the world's leading standard for processing organic textiles. Spikes: Each Shakti mat is hand-cut from recyclable ABS plastic. ABS plastic is incredibly durable and impact-resistant, meaning Shakti spikes maintain their sharpness, strength and effectiveness even after years of regular use. Foam: The padding on our mats is made from recycled polyether foam, currently the most sustainable option available. But that wasn't our only reason for choosing it. Polyether foam (also called cold foam or often shortened to PUR or PU foam) is an HR foam (HR = high resilience). Cold foam is the best and most valuable material among foam types and represents the highest quality. It has several advantages over traditional foam: high air permeability and breathability thanks to its open-cell pore structure. The material also provides more comfortable lying comfort thanks to its high point elasticity. Your sleep comfort matters to us. Blissfoam™: Premium and Classic Shakti mats and pillows contain 100% plant-based Blissfoam™. This unique fill material is made entirely from sustainably grown trees and is encased in organic cotton covers to prevent natural rubber allergies. In acupressure mats and the Classic pillow, it's a single piece of organic foam. In the Premium pillow, it's shredded and recycled, providing moulding capability and optimal tension relief. I have a latex allergy, is Blissfoam™ safe for me to use?

Blissfoam™ is pre-washed three times and sewn into an organic cotton cover before being placed in the outer organic cotton layer of a Shakti mat or pillow. By layering it this way, we reduce airborne allergens and prevent direct contact between your skin and latex. We cannot guarantee individual results as allergies vary. If you're unsure, we recommend consulting your doctor or similar professional.

How do I wash my Shakti mat and pillow?

Follow these 5 simple steps: 1. Remove the inner foam from your mat or pillow. 2. Hand wash the Shakti cover in warm soapy water. 3. Scrub dirty spikes with a brush or old toothbrush. 4. Rinse and hang to dry in the shade. 5. Replace the foam and it's ready to use again! Tips: Avoid putting your Shakti mat or pillow in the washing machine, however tempting it may be. Wash the mat with a mild or eco-friendly detergent. For stubborn stains, apply stain remover directly to the area. Avoid soaking your mat or pillow, and don't dry them in direct sunlight. Shakti products are made from organically certified cotton and dyes. Drying them in the shade helps preserve the colour. When inserting Blissfoam™ in one piece (Classic mats and pillows), turn the cover inside out, align the seams with the foam and fold the cover over. The Shakti Headband can be cleaned following the same steps above (without removing any foam).
