Best acupressure mat: how to choose the level, size and model

There's no acupressure mat that's best for everyone, and that's really the whole point. Just like mattress firmness, acupressure isn't one size fits all. What decides whether you'll be happy is mainly the intensity: how many spikes the mat has, and how sensitive your skin is. Here's what actually sets mats apart, how the levels work, and when Premium or Classic is the right choice.

Is there one best acupressure mat – and what should you compare instead?

The Shakti mat has been around since 2007, and many copies have appeared since. Three things are worth checking before you decide, whichever brand you're looking at.

How sharp the spikes are. Shakti is clear that sharp spikes are the secret behind deep and effective acupressure – with anything else, you risk not quite reaching the spot.

The materials. A cover in GOTS-certified organic cotton and spikes in recyclable, medical-grade ABS plastic, which according to Shakti maintain their sharpness even after years of regular use. Shakti gives a 5-year warranty covering workmanship and material defects, but it doesn't cover normal use and wear.

Whether you can choose the intensity. Acupressure is individual, and with four intensities you can adjust to your own tension. Shakti compares the alternative to a shoe shop with only one type of sneaker.

Which level should you choose – and why is it the most important choice?

The levels vary in intensity depending on the number of spikes, and the logic is the opposite of what many people think: the fewer the spikes, the more intense the effect. That's because your body weight is spread over fewer points, which creates a more powerful sensation.

Shakti's level table counts 230 discs per mat. Level 1 (Light) has 36 spikes per disc and 8,280 in total, and is ideal for beginners. Level 2 (Original) has 27 per disc and 6,210 in total – of the Classic mat at that level, Shakti writes that its 6,210 spikes deliver a medium intensity that suits 95% of users. Level 3 (Advanced) has 18 per disc and 4,140 in total, for experienced users seeking maximum stimulation. Level 4 (Ultra) has 9 per disc and 2,070 in total: the sharpest spikes and the most direct stimulation.

Skin sensitivity determines the experience, not weight. Go too hard at the start and it's harder to build a lasting habit. Allow around 20 minutes per session. The first few minutes feel sharp before the tingling turns into a deep, relaxing warmth, and according to Shakti the redness is simply a sign of increased circulation.

If the level still turns out wrong, you can exchange it for a different level within 30 days, as long as the product is in the same condition as when you received it. There's one exchange per order, and it applies to Shakti products bought directly from shaktimattan.se.

Premium or Classic – what's the difference?

Both lines have the same signature spikes and the same acupressure effect. The difference lies in materials, finish and feel.

Classic is the original: ABS1 signature spikes, a cover in GOTS-certified organic cotton, 100% recycled foam filling, Velcro straps and loops for hanging, and a classic look with square corners. It measures 77 × 40 × 2 cm and weighs 0.85 kg. It comes in Level 2 and Level 3: Green and Black at Level 2, Indigo at Level 3 (Advanced). Lavender and Orange have been discontinued from the Classic mat and won't be coming back – on the Classic pillow, Orange is available while stocks last.

Premium has transparent ABS1 crystal spikes, GOTS-certified organic cotton in both the outer and inner lining, GOLS-certified organic latex Blissfoam™, a discreet YKK® zip in a matching colour and rounded edges. It measures 74 × 40 × 2.5 cm and weighs 1 kg. It's the only product in the range that comes in all four levels, but not every combination of level and colour exists – Level 4 only comes in Black.

Classic is lower in price. If you choose Premium, you're paying for materials, finish and feel, not for stronger acupressure.

What size and format do you need – and is a pillow worth adding?

The mats differ slightly in size, but a mat doesn't need to cover your entire back to give a good session. You can move it to where the tension sits, or combine a mat and pillow for a more effective session.

If the mat is going in your bag, the To-Go Mat is the format built for it: 36 × 51.5 × 1 cm unrolled, 36 × 10 × 5.5 cm rolled up, and 0.35 kg. The base is coated organic cotton that withstands dirt, moisture, sand and grass, while the top side is uncoated for a little softness between the spikes, and the built-in pocket can be stuffed with a t-shirt, for example, as neck support. It only comes in Original, that is, Level 2.

The pillow is a companion to the mat. The Classic pillow is crescent-shaped and filled with a single piece of tried-and-tested foam that distributes the pressure evenly – wonderful for the nape and neck muscles, and it also works well for the lower back and calves. The Premium pillow has twice the surface area, 45 × 36 × 9 cm, and mouldable, shredded Blissfoam™, so your shoulders, neck and the back of your head are reached at the same time.

When should you not use an acupressure mat?

This decides whether an acupressure mat is the right purchase for you at all, and Shakti phrases it as a ban, not a recommendation. Word for word from Shakti's FAQ: “Do not use the Shakti mat or its accessories if you have any of the following conditions:”

Coagulation problems or if you're taking blood-thinning medication. The Shakti mat can affect circulation and is therefore not recommended for people with circulation-related and/or blood coagulation problems.

Epilepsy – The Shakti mat is covered with thousands of sharp spikes and could be dangerous if a person has a seizure whilst using it.

Significant skin damage in the area where you intend to use the mat, including pronounced skin inflammation or large papillomas. Certain skin conditions may be worsened by the mat.

Neuropathy with loss of sensation or reduced sensation, as this can affect your ability to feel the sharpness of the spikes.

Pregnancy – Certain acupressure points are sometimes used to naturally induce labour.

Cardiovascular conditions – The Shakti mat can affect circulation and is therefore not recommended for people with heart and circulatory problems.

Thrombophlebitis – see coagulation problems and cardiovascular conditions above.

Fever or other acute illness.

If you have any other medical condition or illness, we recommend you consult your doctor before using the product. If you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before use.

Pregnancy is on the list for a reason: “Unfortunately, we don't recommend pregnant women use the Shakti mat, particularly during the first trimester. The Shakti mat uses acupressure, which in some cases has been used to naturally induce labour. Always consult your doctor before using the mat.”

On children and tattoos, the FAQ says: “Yes, children can use the Shakti mat. However, we recommend close supervision due to the sharpness of the spikes. It's fine to use the Shakti mat if you have tattoos, but avoid using it during the healing period. Don't use the Shakti mat if you experience any irritation in the tattooed area. Always consult a doctor if you're unsure.”

If you're unsure, 30-day returns apply: you can return the product and get your money back within 30 days of receiving your order, as long as the item is in the same condition as when you received it. The refund is the full amount, including standard delivery, minus the return label.
